Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a chronic pain disorder that affects the sympathetic nervous system. RSD is considered a complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 1, which more fully represents the full scope of the condition's symptoms and signs. CRPS II, previously called causalgia ( a termed coined in the American Civil War when it was first diagnosed), follows partial damage to a nerve. In some cases the pain can be so severe that patients request amputation, only to find that the pain returns in the stump. CFRPS pain can improve within one year after injury, but if it is still unchanged after 12 months (longstanding CRPS), then it will often not improve at all.

Individuals call our lawfirm frustrated that their physician can not or does not seem able to address their pain. We are asked who they can see. While many types of physicians can treat CRPS, a physiatrist or rehabilitation physician is often overlooked. At this time there is no cure for CRPS or RSD. The best doctors can offer is trying to relieve the terrible pain.

In September of 2009, a underinsured motorist case involving Reflex Sympathetic was settled for $592,500.00 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. A 35 year old mother of two was involved in a three car rear end collision. She suffered a cervical disc herniation with nerve damage, cervical brachial syndrome and RSD. The RSD caused her to be unable to continue working as a nurse’s assistant and to be a nurse where she was working her way through college at the time.

In September of 2008, a workplace injury, including Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, case was settled in Philadelphia Pennsylvania for $2.5 million dollars. The injuries arose when a box of coins fell on the bank teller's foot and leg during a delivery. The bank teller initially tried to return to work but was now using a wheel chair and nerve damage had left her in horrific pain.

She required constant medical care, constant medical attention, and she should have a daily nurse to assist her. Her attorney stated that RSD is commonly diagnosed after several other diagnoses fail, even though her medical tests show nothing wrong. The defense claimed the bank teller suffered no injuries. The company eventually settled the claim.

Some six to eight million people are afflicted with RSD. Most of these people are women. RSD usually starts in one extremity, such as the foot or hand, and progressively worsens and spreads to other areas of the body. This pain syndrome can occur after an injury, such as a broken bone. The degree of pain is usually disproportionate to the injury and often continues after the injury is healed.

Causes of RSD

Minor injuries can lead to RSD, which can develop anytime from immediately after you are injured to several days later. The first sign of RSD is a painful sensation that is not in proportion to the type of injury.

Traumas that can lead to RSD:

  • Heart attack
  • Broken bones
  • Bruises
  • Tight-fitting casts
  • Cuts Surgery
  • Infection
  • Repetitive motion disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome

Symptoms of RSD

Not all symptoms of RSD / CRPS need to be evident for a person to have RSD. Patients can have different symptoms depending on the stage of their RSD. If you are experiencing at least three of the following symptoms, you may have RSD:

  • Swelling and tenderness of the joints
  • Tremors
  • Muscle spasms
  • Extreme burning or aching pain
  • Partial or complete loss of motor function
  • Increased sweating around the injured or afflicted area
  • Osteoporosis
  • Bone softening
  • Change in skin color
  • Change in skin temperature

The Three Stages of RSD

There are three stages of RSD. Each stage normally lasts for approximately three months. The different stages can progress at different speeds depending on the patient. A person can experience different stages of RSD in different parts of the body simultaneously. RSD's stages are very unpredictable.

Stage 1: Acute

There is severe pain in the area of the injury, including muscle stiffness, swelling, and muscle cramping. The patient may sweat profusely. His or her skin may experience changes in color and temperature and be more sensitive to light and touch.

Stage 2: Dystrophic

The swelling and pain increase and start to spread to other parts of the body. Muscle tissue and bone may start to break down. Nails and hair may change in consistency, and their growth may become erratic.

Stage 3: Atrophic

The person experiences unmanageable pain and irreversible muscle atrophy. Some patients may experience this third stage of RSD in all parts of the body.
